8th Grade Field Trip to Detroit!

Picture
Our 8th Graders had beautiful weather for their field trip to Detroit!  They toured the LIttle Ceasar's Arena, took a Riverboat Cruise and watched the Tigers win at Comerica Park!

Epic Sandcastles @Spencer Park!

Picture
7th Grade had great weather for their day at Spencer Park, too!  In Math class, students prepared molds and models for an Epic Sandcastle which they built on the beach at the park.  Students also participated in several other math challenges, a scavenger hunt and enjoyed the playground as well!

Reuther  student’s Doodle 4 Google entry wins best in state!

Picture
Reuther Middle School student Breena Keller is the Michigan winner of the Doodle 4 Google competition, a national contest for K-12 students to create a Google Doodle, incorporating their personal artwork into the letters in the Google logo.

Google representatives surprised Keller at a May 3 school assembly, where all her seventh-grade classmates received a t-shirt with her design, based on the theme, “What inspires me.” As a state winner, her doodle will be featured in the online Doodle 4 Google gallery. Reuther faculty members were also invited to a free afterschool Teacher Sandbox Workshop, hosted by Google.

“Breena has combined her inspiration and talent in a unique design to share with audiences across the country,” said Reuther Middle School Principal Wendy Darga. “We are so proud of her accomplishment.”

Keller now moves on to the next round of competition where five state/territory winners will be selected as national finalists. Keller fans can vote for her creation beginning in late May, when all 53 contenders will be posted at https://doodles.google.com/d4g/. Keller could potentially advance to the national level of the competition, making her eligible for a scholarship, a trip to Google Headquarters in California, a technology grant for her school, and the chance to have her creation featured as an interactive experience on Google.com.

“This is a wonderful example of how students can share their ideas and turn them into creative opportunities,” said RCS Executive Director of Secondary Education Carrie Lawler. “We are proud of Breena and the RCS educators who inspire young minds to explore their passions.”

Girls Basketball Opportunities:

Hi Parents!  If you have a daughter who is interested in basketball, there are a couple of opportunities that we want to let you know about.  Our girls basketball program at Rochester High is sponsoring a couple of basketball events in June that we’d love to have your daughters be a part of.  First, on June 8th, we will be hosting “Falcon Friday Night Hoops” from 6-11pm at the Rochester High gym for girls going into 6th-9th grades.  This event will include basketball training, food, games/contests, 3 on 3 tournaments, and swimming.  Cost for this event is $35 with any proceeds going to our girls basketball program.  Another opportunity coming up June 18th-21st is our RHS girls basketball camp for incoming 6th-9th graders (being held at Reuther Middle School).  This camp is only $50 for the week with proceeds going to our girls basketball program.  If you have questions or any interest in either of these events, please contact varsity coach Jeff Haney at jhaney@rochester.k12.mi.us.  We’d love to see the girls there!

thank you 7th Grade Mentors!

Back in December, our 7th Grade Student Mentors proposed a project to inspire and motivate their fellow students.  Their project involved painting all 6 student restrooms different colors and adding a motivational quote to each.  The students and their teachers, Ms. Moore, Mr. Kerr and Ms. Steffes chose the colors and the quotes and with the generous donation of paint and expertise from one of our parents, Mr. Miller, painted all of the restrooms during our Holiday Break.  With the design help of Mrs. Mainero and the painting expertise of Ms. Moore and Mrs. Hoekstra, the restroom project in not only complete--it's beautiful.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen for our Reuther Community!

Student Safety--arrival & Dismissal

Picture
Come help us paint a new plow for this winter season.
Picture
The busiest times of the day are Student Arrival & Dismissal.  When students are racing for the bus and parents are lined up in the loop, it is important for us all to observe the following guidelines:
  •  Please use the parent loop in the front or rear of the building for student drop off.  Please do not drop off or pick up your student in the parking lot--this is very dangerous!
  • Please do not walk in between the buses. This is extremely dangerous.
  • Please do not walk or cross through the bus loop by going into the road during this time.
  • Please use the sidewalks between the parking lot, drop off loop and building entrances.

As the weather changes and the mornings become darker, please be extra careful to look out for our students who are walking and riding their bikes to school.  While we are fortunate to have upgrades at the intersections of Auburn/Culbertson and Culbertson/Marlowe, it is still so important for those of us dropping off or picking up students to be mindful of those students who are walking!

Student safety is always our priority – please join us in keeping all of our students safe!
