Kindness Club News!

With help from the entire Reuther community, the Kindness Club was able to collect 3949 items for Treasures for Troops.  These items filled two flatbed carts which were then boxed and taken to the distribution center in Grand Rapids.  The items will be sent oversees to the American troops.  The 6th grade donated the most items and earned an electronic lunch on November 15th. THANK YOU to everyone for spreading a little kindness to those that support us.

This past week the world celebrated World Kindness Day on November 13th.  The Reuther Kindness Club is challenging every student to participate in Kindness Bingo by completing the acts of kindness on the bingo board throughout the month of November.  Families are also encouraged to take part in this activity.  BINGO BOARD ATTACHED!!!!

6th Grade Double Play!

On Friday evening, Band and Orchestra students from all four of our middle schools came together at Reuther for the Double Play!   The students learned new music together, performed a concert for their parents, had a pizza party and enjoyed the other kind of play -- gym time and inflatables.  Thank you to all of our Band and Orchestra instructors and to all of the parent volunteers -- what a wonderful event for our kids!

SOS -- Signs of Suicide Presentations in 7th Grade Classes

Depression affects about 20% of adolescents by the time they become adults. In addition, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the THIRD leading cause of death of individuals aged 10-14 and the SECOND leading cause of death for college-age youth 17-24.     (2017 CDC WISQARS)

In an effort to create awareness and help reduce the risk of depression, suicide and self-injury among our students, your student’s counselors presented a two day suicide & depression SOS (Signs of Suicide)  program to ALL 7th Grade World Studies classes over the past two weeks.

The goal of this SOS Program is to help students:

· learn the signs and symptoms of depression, suicide & self-harm
· understand that depression is a treatable illness
· understand what ACT is and stands for: A- (Acknowledge) C- (Care)  T- (Tell)
· help students know whom, in the school and at home, they can turn to for help
· discuss and share healthy ways to “manage stress and deal with challenges”
· encourage students to create their own Mental Health & Wellness Plan

An electronic copy of the parent newsletter and a Parent Toolkit are attached below so that you have information and resources about Depression and Suicide and  related risks. Please take a few minutes to read over this very important topic with your student.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s counselor.

Box Tops for Education
The Reuther Middle School PTSA is collecting Box Tops for Education again this year. The Box Top program is making a change in the way they collect Box Tops and donate earnings. Now you can do everything online. No more clipping. No more sending Box Tops to school. All you need is your smartphone.

• Download the new Box Tops app (Go to BTFE.com to download app)
• Select Reuther Middle School
• Shop as you normally would
• Simply scan your store receipts to find the participating products
The app will automatically credit the Reuther Box Tops earnings online.

You can still clip the Box Top coupons on products and send them to school. Please send in any unexpired, clipped Box Tops to Reuther’s main office for collection.

We appreciate and thank you very much for your support. If you have any questions please contact Lynn Toomey at l.toomey@comcast.net

Reuther Middle School is pleased to host New York Times bestselling author, Watt Key, during the week of April 20th, 2020.  Mr. Key has been invited to the Rochester community by the Authors In April organization. This is made possible through the financial assistance of the Reuther PTSA.  Students will have the opportunity to read a novel and participate in a discussion with Mr. Key.  For your convenience, we have extended our registration sale pricing and are continuing to sell the books through Oct. 19, 2018.  If purchased through this pre-order, your student will receive his/her book in language arts in the spring prior to the AIA unit.

Student Safety--arrival & Dismissal

Picture
Picture

The busiest times of the day are Student Arrival & Dismissal.  When students are racing to and from the bus and parents are lined up in the loop, it is important for us all to observe the following guidelines:

  • Please do not walk in between the buses. This is extremely dangerous.
  • Please do not walk or cross through the bus loop by going into the road during this time.
  • Please use the sidewalks between the parking lot, drop off loop and building entrances.
  • Please use the parent loop in the front or rear of the building for student drop off.  Please do not drop off or pick up your student in the front parking lot--this is very dangerous!

As the weather changes and the mornings become darker, please be extra careful to look out for our students who are walking and riding their bikes to school.  While we are fortunate to have upgrades at the intersections of Auburn/Culbertson and Culbertson/Marlowe, it is still so important for those of us dropping off or picking up students to be mindful of those students who are walking!

Student safety is always our priority!
Please join us in keeping all of our students safe!

Hungry in the morning?

Just a quick note to remind everyone that Breakfast is available in the cafeteria every morning between 7:00-7:30am!

PLEASE HELP US KEEP OUR STUDENTS SAFE ON THEIR WAY TO & FROM SCHOOL!

Picture

Many Reuther students walk and ride their bikes to school.  Please be cautious when driving near our school and yield to them...It's the Law!   When you exit the Reuther pick up and drop off onto Culbertson and wait at the light to turn left onto Westbound Auburn Rd...you MUST YIELD to the students crossing at that crosswalk over Auburn. They have the walk sign when you get the green light, and the traffic rule is the driver MUST yield to the pedestrians.  Our school liaison officer will be patrolling to help enforce this and keep our kids safe.

Click here for Mayor Barnett's Back to School Safety Message

Please keep these rules in the forefront...As a driver, you must yield:
  • To a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk.
  • To a pedestrian in the crosswalk, even if your traffic light is green.
  • To children near or in a school zone crosswalk when school is in session-- Be especially cautious as children may unexpectedly dart out into the street.
  •  To pedestrians with disabilities, including physical, hearing and visual disabilities.
  •  When turning at any intersection. This includes all turns, whether or not there are lights or traffic control devices present.
  •  When stopping at an intersection with a stop sign or a flashing red light.
  •  At an intersection with a flashing yellow light
  •  To a pedestrian in an unmarked crosswalk on the driver’s side of the roadway when no traffic control devices are present.
  • To a pedestrian who enters a crosswalk before the signal has changed.
  • To a pedestrian crossing the street from an alley, driveway, building or private road.
