September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

While suicide prevention is important to address year-round, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month provides a dedicated time to come together with collective passion and strength around a difficult topic. The truth is, we can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health conditions and suicide, because just one conversation can change a life.

Also, I’d like to let you know that ALL of our 7th graders receive a two-day Suicide Prevention program through their science classes taught by Mrs. Suhajda & myself. We discuss signs & symptoms of suicide, what to do and how to receive help.  We also address depression and focus on healthy ways to manage it including creating a wellness plan.
Here’s some information for you to review.

depression awareness & suicide Prevention

Dear 7th Grade Parents/Guardians,

The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions.  And it can be easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression appears to be occurring at a much earlier age.

To proactively address this issue, Rochester Schools provides depression awareness and suicide prevention training throughout ALL middle schools using the SOS Middle School Program. This program has been developed by the highly regarded non-profit organization that created the SOS (Signs of Suicide) program, used by thousands of schools nationwide since 2000.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently released its’ Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted in 2005 across states, and the percentage of students who reported that they had seriously thought about killing themselves, ranged from 18% of sixth graders to 28% of eighth graders.

Just recently, I delivered the SOS curriculum to all 7th Grade students through their science class.

The goal of this SOS Program is to help students…

  •  Identify signs of depression and suicide in themselves and others
  •  Learn how to respond to them effectively
  •  To understand that depression is a treatable illness
  •  To understand what ACT is and stands for:  A- (Acknowledge)  C- (Care)  T-(Tell)
  •  To impress upon our students that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the
 simple steps of ACT
  •  To help students know whom, in the school and at home, they can turn to for help, if they
 need it
  • To discuss and share healthy & positive ways in which students can “manage” stress and deal with life challenges
  • To have students create their own Wellness Plan that will help them identify an area or need for improvement that they bring attention to and focus upon.

To help support my presentation, I’m also sending you an electronic copy of the parent newsletter and a handout so that you have information and resources about depression and its related risks. Please take a few minutes to read over this very important information with your student.

 Sincerely,
 Ann Prashar (7th Grade Counselor)

Stress & the Holidays

The holiday season can sometimes bring unwelcome guests — stress and depression. And it's no wonder. The holidays present a dizzying array of demands — parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining, to name just a few.
But with some practical tips, you can minimize the stress that accompanies the holidays.  See the article attached below for more information.

Career Planning for 7th Grade students

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Rochester Community School District believes that Career Planning at all grade levels is essential and critical to the success of every student.  Beginning in the 7th Grade, students are introduced to the following content areas:

  The Six Michigan Career Pathways
  Career Cruising
  Education Development Plan (EDP).

During the month of December, your 7th grade student received two full class periods of instruction, information and in-class career exploration in a computer lab in order to fulfill the state level requirements for their personal EDP’s.

As a 7th grader, your child learned about the following:

  • The Six Michigan Career Pathways
  • The Career Cruising Website and its’ special features  (www.careercruising.com)
  • How to create and set-up their own EDP’s (via Career Cruising)

Later, in the 8th grade, students will continue to work on completing their EDP’s as outlined in our state guidelines.  This electronic portfolio follows them right into high school. I’ve attached information about Career Cruising, a very informative vimeo on the “New Economy”, EDP’s and The Six Michigan Career Pathways for you to review.

Sincerely,
Ann Prashar

It's hard enough negotiating the holidays when there are only two sides of the family involved. But blended families have the extra emotional and logistical challenge of sharing holiday time and making visitation arrangements.
